Tortella densa is a moss -Art from the family pottiaceae . This species was also known under the synonyms Tortula tortuosa fo. curta alberts. and Barbula inclinata var. densa Lorentz & Molendo.

features

Tortella densa forms dense, yellow-green to green, in the lower part brownish, non-rhizoid felt pads or lawns. The densely and evenly leafed, little branched shoots reach heights of 1 to 4 centimeters. The leaves are lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, have flat leaf margins, are keeled in the upper part of the leaf and gradually narrowed into the sharp leaf tip. The leaf vein emerges as a short spike tip. When wet, the leaves are tightly upright, protruding, dryly curved, curled and twisted

The lamina cells of the leaf base are elongated, rectangular, hyaline, smooth and are sharply demarcated from the rounded, green and strongly papillary cells in the upper part of the leaf. The upper (ventral) side of the leaf vein has elongated, narrow and smooth cells. The stems do not have a central strand.

The moss is diocesan . Sporophytes are not known.

Systematics

Tortella densa was partially placed on the quite similar species Tortella inclinata or considered a variety of this species. Tortella densa differs from this one in that it has a slightly taller lawn, the lack of rhizoid felt and long, pointed, non-hooded leaf tips.

Location claims and distribution

Tortella densa grows in light and dry locations on calcareous soil interspersed with gravel or stones and on limestone.

The distribution is poorly known, as this type of moss has often been overlooked or confused with similar species. The occurrences are particularly in Western, Central and Northern Europe, east to the Caucasus. In Central Europe it occurs mainly in the Alps, where it rises up to the alpine level.
