Toshiki Tajima ( Japanese 田島 俊 樹 , Tajima Toshiki ; born January 18, 1948 ) is a Japanese theoretical physicist and professor at the University of California, Irvine (UCI).

Life

Tajima graduated from Tokyo University with a bachelor's degree in 1971 and a master's degree in 1973 and received his doctorate from the UCI in 1975. As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of California, Los Angeles and from 1980 at the University of Texas at Austin , where he became a professor, which he remained until 2001. From 1998 to 2001 he was Special Assistant to the Associate Director at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and from 2000 to 2002 at SLAC . From 2002 he was director of the Kansai Photon Science Institute of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency and from 2008 to 2011 professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Since 2008 he has also been at the KEK accelerator . He is a Rostok professor at the UCI.

He deals with plasma physics , laser physics , nuclear fusion , plasma astrophysics , accelerator physics and medical applications of physics. With John M. Dawson he developed Laser Wakefield Acceleration (LWFA), a laser application in particle acceleration. He was also involved in the experimental demonstration of the concept's feasibility in 1994.

In 2006 he received the Nishina Prize and in 2015 the Premio Enrico Fermi and was Blaise Pascal Professor and Einstein Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was Chairman of the International Committee for Ultrahigh Intensity Lasers (ICUIL) and Deputy Director of the International Center for Zetta-Exawatt Science and Technology (IZEST) at the École Polytechnique (Director Gérard Mourou ). He is a Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. For 2019 he was awarded the Robert R. Wilson Prize of the American Physical Society and the Hannes Alfvén Prize , and for 2020 the Charles Hard Townes Award of the Optical Society of America .

He is Chief Science Officer of Tri Alpha Energy in Foothill Ranch near Lake Forrest, California, a company founded in 1998 that deals with fusion (especially Aneutronic Fusion, Field reversed configuration).
