Toshiyuki Kobayashi ( Japanese 小林 俊 行 , Kobayashi Toshiyuki ; born September 9, 1962 in Osaka Prefecture ) is a Japanese mathematician who deals with symmetrical spaces and representations of groups of beds.

Life

Kobayashi studied at Tokyo University , where he received his master's degree in 1987 and his doctorate in 1990. In 1991 he became an Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo and in 2001 he moved to the RIMS in Kyoto, where he received a full professorship in 1993. From 2007 he was a professor at the University of Tokyo and from 2011 at the Kavli Institute of the University of Tokyo.

In 1991/1992 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study and also at Harvard University and the Mittag-Leffler Institute . He was also at MSRI , at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, in Odense, at Chalmers University in Gothenburg, in Singapore, Paderborn, Reims, Poitiers, Lyon I, at IHES , at the University of Paris VI and VII and did research for the CNRS .

He is known for his work on discontinuous groups (lattices) in the theory of Lie groups and non-Riemannian homogeneous spaces and the theory of discrete symmetry breaking in the theory of unitary representations .

Since 2005 he has been editor of the Japanese Journal of Mathematics.

In 2008 he received the Humboldt Research Prize and in 1999 the Spring Prize of the Japanese Mathematical Society. He received the Inoue Prize in 2011, the Takebe Prize in 1997, the Purple Ribbon Medal in 2014, the Osaka Science Prize in 2006 and the Japan Society for the Advancement of Science Prize in 2007. He was invited speaker at the 2002 International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing ( Branching problems of unitary representations ). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .

From 2006 to 2008 he was on the Japanese Science Council and from 2003 to 2007 on the Board of Trustees of the Japanese Mathematical Society .
