Tostaky is the fourth studio album by the French rock band Noir Désir , which was released in December 1992 under the Barclay Records label . Not least because of the single Tostaky (le continent) , this album experienced a resounding success, which made the group one of the most important representatives of French rock of the 1990s.

Emergence

At the end of May 1991, the promotional tour of the album Du ciment sous les plaines had to be canceled after Bertrand Cantat passed out during a concert in Besançon . Since the cohesion within the group was already disturbed at this point, the band members decided to split up for the time being. After a break of about one year, which Bertrand Cantat had spent partly in Mexico, Cuba and Guatemala and wrote new texts, the group met again for a few jam sessions. During the separation period, the three band members dealt independently with the music of the band Fugazi and let themselves be shaped. So the group turned to Ted Niceley, who had produced the group's first studio album, with the request to produce their album as well. Serge Teyssot-Gay says: “You mentally prepare a melody and then you just can't get it right in the studio. Niceley helped us to translate our music the way we had it in mind. ”Besides Fugazi, the band Sonic Youth served as a musical influence on this album. The album was recorded in England in September 1992 . The group changed their recording method, this time recording title by title, rather than having each musician take turns recording their parts as before.

The album's title, Tostaky , is the abbreviated form of the Spanish saying “todo está aqui” (“everything is here”), one of the slogans of the Spanish revolutionaries under Emiliano Zapata during the Mexican Revolution at the beginning of the 20th century. The album is characterized by a more raw sound as well as a clearer emphasis on the guitar riffs of Serge Teyssot-Gay. The latter is particularly evident in the songs Tostaky (le continent) , Here It Comes Slowly and 7 minutes . Some tracks, like 7 Minutes , go in the direction of noise rock , while others, like It Spurts and Johnny Colère , can almost be assigned to metal . Other songs like Oublié , Lolita nie en bloc , One Trip / One Noise and Marlène , on the other hand, are rather calm.

The lyrics are less elaborate than the previous albums, but more imaginative. Some pieces on this album, such as B. Tostaky (le continent) , One Trip / One Noise or Lolita never en bloc , have become classics of the band, which are played over and over again at concerts. Some of these pieces were reproduced in different ways during live performances, as the album Noir Désir en public shows. Here It Comes Slowly is the first Noir Désir song to deal with French politics. It deals with the rise of the French right-wing nationalists, but this has largely disappeared due to the English text. In Ici Paris is in the British musician Syd Barrett ( Pink Floyd alluded). This is the only case where the name of a musician appears in the lyrics of Noir Désir. Johnny Colère is a cover version, the original is from the French band Les Nus .

The expectations of the record company Barclay were based on the whirlwind start of Nirvana .

The Tostaky Tour through France began in January 1993, lasted four months and had the special feature of having stopped in Paris three times in three different months and three different halls.
