Death lantern (atur)
The death lantern (French lanterne des morts ) in Atur , a district of the French commune Boulazac Isle Manoire in the Dordogne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , was built in the 12th century. The death lantern has been on the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique since 1932 .
The cylindrical structure on the now abandoned cemetery is the oldest funeral lantern in the Dordogne department. It has a diameter of about one meter and is about three meters high. The iron fence is from the 19th century, as is the wrought iron cross on top. At a height of one meter there is a rectangular opening that allowed a lamp to be lit in it, which was then pulled up with a chain to the second, smaller opening. These four openings, through which one could see the light from the lamp, are framed by set pillars.
