At 483 m, the Totenstein is one of the highest mountains in the Erzgebirge foothills in Saxony . It is located north of the Chemnitz district of Grüna and south of the Limbach-Oberfrohna district of Pleißa in the Rabensteiner Forest . The A4 autobahn , which is only a few hundred meters away , reaches its highest point here on its route through Germany.
history
On the mostly wooded mountain, a lookout tower was built by the Erzgebirgszweigverein Limbach in 1886 , which was named Maria-Josepha-Turm and which had to be demolished in 1953 due to dilapidation. In its place a massive radio tower was built later, which still exists today on the mountain top. Almost a hundred meters next to it, a new, 30 m high observation tower was built in 1998 based on the model of the old tower, which can be climbed free of charge and offers a comprehensive view of the Ore Mountains and its foreland when the weather is nice .
Radio tower
This is a so-called A-tower , which served in the narrow-band directional radio network as the party's district radio center (SED) in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district . DAB was broadcast on channel 12A until December 2014 . Today it is only used for directional radio connections and mobile communications.
