A tower
A tower is the name of a telecommunications tower , as it was built in the late 1950s in all districts of the GDR for the SED directional radio network . The construction and types of A-towers are different. The height of the rectangular A-towers is a maximum of 20 meters plus an antenna support up to 10 meters high. The height of the prestressed concrete towers is up to 60 meters. Most of the rectangular towers were painted green. Some were also paneled with wood.
The Central Committee of the SED began in the second half of the 1950s with the construction of an independent narrowband radio network (RFN) with two network levels, independent of all other communication networks:
- Network level 1
- Expansion of the connections from the Central Committee in Berlin to all district leaderships of the party and
- Network level 2
- from the latter to all district lines
The establishment was a consequence of the events of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953 in the GDR. In all districts of the GDR, apart from metropolitan areas, the district radio control centers (BzRFuZ) were built, initially in old barracks, later in the towers.
All BzRFuZ received the identifier as A1 objects with the relevant district code, e.g. B. for the death stone at Karl-Marx-Stadt the identifier 14A1. In the mid-1960s, the NVA joined the network with its own narrowband radio network. Both networks were pure communication networks over which telephone and teletype connections were operated. The towers of these nets were not reconnaissance towers.
As a result of the reconnaissance of these networks by the telecommunications reconnaissance of the army of the German armed forces in the 1960s, the operation of both networks was technically severely restricted. The special radio service of the Ministry for State Security could be the same towers are used for its educational activities. The area around the A towers of the narrowband radio network was considered a restricted military area and was marked, secured and protected against unauthorized entry. Violations and pictorial representation ( taking photos ) were put under threat of punishment.
After the political change , the buildings were initially taken over by the Federal Ministry for Post and Telecommunications . In some cases, they were used by providers of cellular networks. This was followed by processing or upgrading and using it as a telecommunications facility.
In addition to A towers, there were also B towers and C towers .

Similar towers
In other Eastern European countries, high-rise telecommunications towers have also been built at various locations. An example in Poland is the Bytków television tower . In Hungary there is a similar tower next to the transmitter mast of the Széchenyihegy transmitter near Budapest and in Romania on Mount Lapoș.
