The Totenstein is the highest elevation of the Rabensteiner ridge. In the middle of the 19th century, the trees on the summit plateau were cut down so that there was a comprehensive view. The Erzgebirgszweigvereine Limbach and Rabenstein had a lookout tower built in 1886, which was made by the locksmith Viktor Ludwig from Grüna. The inauguration of the 3,250 mark expensive tower took place on October 4, 1886. With a height of 22 meters, it offered a comprehensive all-round view, which in appropriate weather conditions to the south to the striking mountains of the Ore Mountains ( Fichtelberg , Keilberg , Scheibenberg , Pöhlberg ) and to the north to the Rochlitzer Berg and the Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Leipzig. The tower was named after Maria Josepha von Sachsen . The daughter of Prince Georg of Saxony married Archduke Otto Franz Joseph of Austria in 1886 . In 1886, Prince Georg was protector of the Erzgebirge Association. During the summer months, guests were looked after under the tower, so that the tower became a popular destination for excursions.

The old tower had to be demolished in 1953 due to its dilapidation. In its place a massive radio tower was built later , which still exists today on the mountain top. Almost one hundred meters from it, a new, 30-meter-high observation tower was built in 1998 based on the model of the old tower for around 150,000 euros, which was inaugurated on October 4, 1998. The dedication was: "For the mountain to adorn, the people for joy". The tower can be climbed free of charge and, when the weather is nice, offers a comprehensive view of the Ore Mountains and the Ore Mountains foreland .
