The Pöhlberg is a mountain in the Ore Mountains ( Saxony ) with a height of 831.1 m above sea level. NHN . It is located immediately to the east of the district town of Annaberg-Buchholz in the Ore Mountains . Until the 18th century, the mountain was referred to as Bülberg or Bielberg on maps and city maps . The Slavic syllable "Biel" = white (white mountain) but also "Bühl" or "Biel" can be used as ancient names for hill or hill.
geology
As the remains of erosion from a former lava flow , like its neighbors Bärenstein and Scheibenberg , it consists mainly of basalt , which forms imposing columns on the western and northern mountain slopes. On the north side of the Pöhlberg these pillars (called "butter churns") are opened up by a former quarry and are therefore clearly visible.
Surroundings
There are other interesting cultural and historical sights on the mountain. The oldest mining area in the Annaberg area , called St. Briccius , is located on the eastern mountain slope . The tin, silver and copper mining carried out here can be traced back to the year 1442. The south-eastern mountain slope is characterized by an extensive stone ridge landscape . It is the habitat for over 40 woody species and over 25 different bird species.
Tourist development
Despite its proximity to the city of Annaberg, the mountain was hardly developed for several centuries. In the middle of the 19th century a road was built on the mountain. The excursion restaurant with hotel and 35-meter-high observation tower located on the summit was opened on July 12, 1897. The construction took place on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Annaberg in 1896. The building was expanded several times. In good conditions, the view from the summit extends in the direction
- West: via Annaberg-Buchholz and Schlettau to the Scheibenberg and Auersberg ,
- North: via Annaberg-Buchholz to Chemnitz ,
- East: via Großrückerswalde to Hirtstein ,
- South: over the Bärenstein to the Erzgebirge ridge with Fichtelberg and Klínovec (Keilberg) .
About 100 m east of the observation tower is the surveying station 130 of the Royal Saxon Triangulation, built in 1865 .
In 1915 a more than 1500 meter long bobsleigh track was laid out, which is no longer usable today. A ski jump built in the 1970s has since been demolished. On the mountain slopes there are two ski slopes with lifts and a toboggan run.
On April 28, 1935, a four-meter-high memorial stone with a bronze plate was consecrated on Pöhlberg for the bank clerk Albert Fläming from Buchholz, who died here on September 26, 1923 in the Pöhlberg Battle and was venerated by the National Socialists as a martyr . The Pöhlberg battle was taken on the occasion of the invasion of the Reichswehr in Saxony in October 1923, as a result of which Erich Zeigner was replaced as Saxon Prime Minister.
Others
At the foot of the Pöhlberg lies the Annaberger Stadtwald, in which u. a. a wildlife enclosure is located. The Pöhlberg is a popular local recreation area.
During the First World War , a prominent and highly competitive elevation on the western front (east of Reims near Moronvilliers ) was called Pöhlberg because of its similarity to the Ore Mountains on the German side . The name came from the Saxon troops of the XII who were fighting there for a long time . Corps back.
The mining landscape on the Pöhlberg is a selected site of the UNESCO World Heritage s Montanregion Erzgebirge .
