The Filzteich is a reservoir in Schneeberg / Erzgebirge in Saxony . It is a popular local recreation area and monitored EU bathing water with a swimming pool, an 83 m long water slide, pedal boats, row boats and sunbathing areas; Naturism is possible. The western part of the Filzteich pond is a nature reserve and, like the neighboring Hartmannsdorfer Forest, belongs to the Hartmannsdorf community near Kirchberg in the Zwickau district .

history

The reservoir was created between 1483 and 1485 under the direction of the Schneeberg mining captain Heinrich von Starschedel on the old tin soap site as an impact water reservoir for the Schneeberg mining industry . "Filz" means peat and stands for the boggy ground on which the Zschorlaubach / Filzbach / Seifenbach is dammed. Late 18th century visited Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to Filzteich and described him as ... a natural wonder overwhelmingly beautiful in the sight of the magnificent water area, surrounded by deep green forests hours wide spruce ... . In 1933 the facility was renovated and expanded with a beach and parking lot; it fell into disrepair during the Second World War . As part of the national reconstruction work, the facility was rebuilt between 1953 and 1963 and converted into a lido. The current operator is the Schneeberg municipal utility.

The felt pond is the second oldest artificial pond in the Ore Mountains after the Geyers pond and the fifth oldest dam in Germany.

Dam break and reconstruction

On February 4, 1783 came as a result of continuous rain and rapid snow melt to the slippery slope of Filzteiches. The dam tore to a width of more than 22.5 m (over 40 Dresden cubits ) and an 8 m high tidal wave poured into the valley to Zschorlau and Auerhammer . In Zschorlau 4 houses were swept away and more than 30 were badly damaged, some mills were torn away completely. 18 people drowned in the floods that caused damage of 30,000 thalers in Zschorlau alone. However, the force of the water prevented the water from penetrating the mines, as the flood pushed the door of the water house shut and closed it with the earth swept away. The 40 miners who had retired survived unharmed and the mines remained open.

The main cause of the accident was the rotting of the wooden pond cone. By this with an upwardly removable pin ( harrow closable) flume at the lowest point of the pond dam the pond can be emptied. Because the earth resting on the channel gradually crumbled, a cavity formed in the dam . Since wooden channels have always been difficult and not without danger to repair and to prevent the repetition of such an accident, during the costly "... restoration of the pond dam instead of the previous wooden pond channel and the wooden spigot standing vertically within the pond ..." built of granite. "The construction of this channel, the restoration of the dam, the construction of a stone flood, etc. cost over 17,000 thalers." And were completed in 1786.

A miner living nearby was in charge of this artificial pond . The water flowing into the new canal made a thunder-like roar. Right next to the canal, a stone with an inscription still reminds of the dam breach.

According to the chronicle of the city of Aue, the Filzteich dam broke as early as 1573, which was caused by flooding in the region and had a devastating effect on the settlements of Zschorlau, Neudörfel and Aue below.

Ore Mountains mining region

The felt pond is part of the Schneeberg mining area , which received the UNESCO World Heritage title in 2019 as part of the Ore Mountains Mining Region .
