The United States Geological Survey mapped them using the United States Navy's own surveys and aerial photographs from 1961 to 1967. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1968 after Stephen R. Toth, a glaciologist at Byrd Station from 1965 to 1966.
