Tourism in Lower Austria

Tourism is an important economic factor in the Austrian state of Lower Austria , which is promoted on the basis of a state law.

Economical meaning

Tourism achieves a share of 3% of the gross value added in Lower Austria, of which around 40% is accounted for by overnight tourism and 60% by excursion tourism.

There are a total of around 3,200 accommodation providers in Lower Austria with around 69,000 beds. In 2018 they achieved a record year with 7,414 million overnight stays - an increase of 3.2% over the previous year. In 2017 7.18 million overnight stays (+4.1% compared to the previous year) and 2.85 million arrivals (+7.6% compared to the previous year) were recorded. Around a third of the overnight stays are spent on holiday, health and business tourism. The domestic market is the strongest market with 69%, followed by Germany with 12%. Niederösterreich-Werbung promotes overnight tourism with quality initiatives such as the “Genießerzimmer Niederösterreich”.

According to a study from March 2018, almost 40 million day trips are made in and to Lower Austria, which corresponds to a turnover of 1.4 billion euros. In 2006 the Niederösterreich-CARD, an excursion card for Lower Austria, was introduced. This is a subsidiary of Niederösterreich Werbung.

Lower Austrian Tourism Act

The legal basis for state promotion of tourism is the Lower Austrian Tourism Act of 2010. It regulates how tourism in Lower Austria can be promoted and further developed, taking into account tourist suitability, ecological resilience and economic conditions. Among other things, it regulates:

  • Accommodation tax for accommodation providers
  • Prospective contribution for those interested in tourism
  • Renting of living space for tourist purposes in Lower Austria
  • Division of the communities into local classes
  • Ordinance on safeguarding the value of overnight taxes

Niederösterreich-Werbung GmbH was founded in 1995 to outsource tourism advertising from the office of the Lower Austrian state government . Niederösterreich-Werbung GmbH is owned by the State of Lower Austria (95%) and the Lower Austria Chamber of Commerce (5%). The managing director is Christoph Madl. The company employs around 45 people and is based in the economic center of Lower Austria in St. Pölten .

As the official tourism and marketing organization of the country, the company has the task of acting as a service-oriented partner for the tourism industry in the cooperation system with the destinations. It is also important to market Lower Austria as an excursion and holiday destination at home and abroad - increasingly also in digital media. The basis for this is the Lower Austria 2020 Tourism Strategy. This promotes an increase in overnight stays, an increase in added value in excursion tourism and an increase in the number of quality partners. In addition, Niederösterreich-Werbung is responsible for coordinating media planning for the economic department and for implementing the top-level sport sponsoring and popular sport programs for SPORT.LAND.Niederösterreich.

The management of the four nationwide strategic business areas includes:

  • Vacation and excursion tourism
  • Group travel
  • Economic tourism
  • Health tourism

Marketing takes place in the target markets of Austria , Germany , Hungary , the Czech Republic and Slovakia .
