history

It was built as a civil airfield in the 1940s and served as the United States military airfield between 1950 and 1960. The airport was then expanded and opened in 1965. At that time he was named after the autocratic ruler François Duvalier . In 1986 it was renamed Aéroport international de Port-au-Prince before it was named in 2003 in honor of the revolutionary Toussaint Louverture .

The tower was badly damaged in an earthquake in January 2010 , while the runway and the rest of the infrastructure remained largely intact. The administration of the airport was then temporarily headed by the US Air Force at the request of Haitian President René Préval .
