Shibata Toyo ( Japanese 柴 田 ト ヨ ; born June 26, 1911 in Tochigi , Tochigi Prefecture , Japan ; † January 20, 2013 in Utsunomiya , Tochigi Prefecture, Japan) was a Japanese poet .

Life

Shibata Toyo was born in 1911 as the only daughter of the wealthy rice trader Morishima Tomizō ( 森 島 富 造 ) and his wife Yasu ( ヤ ス ) in Tochigi. Since her youth she worked in restaurants, where she met Shibata Eikichi ( 柴 田 曳 dort ), whom she married at the age of 33. The following year their son Ken'ichi ( 健 一 ) was born. When her husband died in 1992 and she was now living alone and she had to give up her hobby, classical Japanese dance , after a hip injury , her son recommended that her write poetry. From 2004 these appeared in the national daily newspaper Sankei Shimbun .

She self-published 42 of these in October 2009 with the collection of poems Kujikenaide (“Don't let yourself be discouraged”). In 2010 a new edition was published by Asuka Shinsha . The book, with a new look and illustrations, became an instant bestseller with a circulation of more than 1.6 million copies.

In 2011, Shibata's second collection of poems, Hyakusai ("100 years old"), followed. This sold more than 450,000 times.

She died in a nursing home in Utsunomiya at the age of 101.
