Trachelomonas is an algal species from the order of the euglenid .

description

(1) / (5) flagella, (2) lorica, (3) cell membrane, (4)  eye spot , (6) nucleus, (7) chloroplast

Trachelomonas lives as a unicellular flagellate with a noticeably long flagellum , which is usually more than twice as long as the cell. The cells reach a length of 13 to 55 µm. They contain two or more marginal, green chloroplasts , often with pyrenoids and an extraplastidial eye-spot . The cells are surrounded by a rigid housing, the so-called Lorica . The lorica is round, elliptical or vase-shaped, and can be yellowish, reddish, brownish, or black in color, and is ornamented with warts or spines in many species. The outlet opening for the flagellum is often designed as a "collar". Due to manganese and iron compounds in the Lorica, the cell contents are often not visible under the light microscope.

Reproduction

The asexual multiplication takes place by cell division within the housing; one of the two daughter cells hatches through the flagellum opening and forms a new lorica.

Sexual reproduction is unknown.

distribution

Trachelomonas lives in the plankton and above the sediments of small bodies of water, especially in organically polluted, oxygen-poor, stagnant bodies of water and moors. The algae can form algal blooms , which causes the water to turn brown.
