TrackMania 2 (spelling: TrackMania² ) is a racing game from the French development studio Nadeo and the successor to the TrackMania game series . Along with ShootMania, it is one of the two games that are distributed through ManiaPlanet. The first Canyon environment appeared there on August 17th, 2011 in the form of a public beta phase and officially appeared on September 14th, 2011.

Gameplay

TrackMania²'s gameplay is very similar to its predecessor. The player can drive on self-built routes in single and multiplayer mode, whereby no collisions with other vehicles are possible. The editor, in which routes from individual components can be put together, is also included again. The game is very strongly integrated into the "ManiaPlanet" platform in order to further increase the participation and creativity of the community in contrast to its predecessors.

Game types

Single player

  • Race: The race mode is a normal time trial. Depending on the time the player has reached, gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded. Every five minutes there is the possibility to contest an official race, in which one gets for the first time a medal Planets (which in the TrackMania predecessors were called "Coppers").
  • Platform: This game type can only be played after downloading a free DLC from ManiaPlanet and separately from the main game. In the platform mode, the player tries to drive particularly difficult routes without using the reset function. The time does not count here, the medals are awarded according to the frequency of the reset function.

Multiplayer

  • Split-screen mode: Nadeo has built this mode into the parts of TrackMania 2 and offers four players on one PC the opportunity to race against each other on a track. But here, too, no collision is possible.
  • Time Attack: In the time trial, the goal is to set as good a time as possible within a time limit. You can reverse the car as often as you like and start the route from the beginning until the time - z. B. five minutes - for the current route has expired. The evaluation then takes place.
  • Tournaments (Rounds): In this type of game, points are awarded depending on the placement in a race. When a player reaches the point limit, the score is evaluated.
  • Team: Similar to the tournament mode, points are awarded here, but it is rated according to teams.
  • Cup: In this type of game, too, points are awarded according to placement. If a player reaches the point limit here, he must first win a race in order to be the overall winner.
  • Laps: This mode is similar to the tournament mode. In contrast to this, it is not only the placement after each race that counts, but also all drivers who have completed several checkpoints but have not reached the goal. This mode is particularly suitable for longer races which often go over several laps (multilap).
  • Chase Time Attack: 2 drivers form a team. Alternately, one of the two must be the first to pass the next checkpoint. If the wrong one drives through the checkpoint first, then you have to restart. In the end, the fastest team wins, with the second driver counting the finish as team time.
  • Chase: Chase is the most complicated official mode and a team mode that also requires synchronization between the drivers. It is similar to the Chase Time Attack mode. In contrast to this one, however, similar to rounds, you drive against another team at the same time. Several drivers per team are possible and if a checkpoint is taken by the wrong driver, this does not lead directly to the end of the race, but only to a point loss. The race has several different starting options: firstly, a team gets a point advantage (points gap), secondly, a team achieves the initially specified number of points. Thirdly, a team first achieves the specified number of laps without losing through the points gap. Fourth, with a team, the maximum number of drivers allowed but one to give up. Which outcome is how likely depends heavily on the settings. The number of points, the number of laps, the points gap and the maximum number of tasks (retire) per team can be set individually.

With the ability to change or create the game modes via script, there are also some modes that were created by the community. However, none of them have regularly visited servers.

Environments

Several environments appeared for TrackMania 2, but they must be purchased individually. Nadeo originally wanted to bring out a new environment every year.

Canyon

Canyon is the first environment available since the game was released. The player drives in a sports car through a desert landscape with deep canyons. Road sections, platforms and tunnels are available for the construction of the routes.

Valley

Originally planned as the first environment, Nadeo had to stop working on Valley early. The car planned for this was taken over in Canyon. After the release of the game Shootmania , Valley will appear as a second environment with a new car. Valley was implemented in ManiaPlanet on July 4th, 2013 - together with “Stadium”.

stage

The Stadium environment is a port of the TrackMania Nations series environment with new high-resolution textures and an improved engine. This environment was in beta from February 27, 2013 until the June 20, 2013 release.

Lagoon

On May 23, 2017, the Lagoon environment was added from TrackMania Turbo . TrackMania Turbo was released on March 24, 2016.

Titlepacks

A title pack is an additional expansion that appears in ManiaPlanet like an independent game. Most of these title packs are available free of charge and are based on the standard environments, but contain additional blocks and their own ranking list as well as possibly a new solo mode with its own tracks. They are based on the environments of existing TrackMania² titles. To play a title pack, players need the full version of the respective base game. Most title packs are community-created titles. One example is the ESL title, which enables participation in e-sports and can be downloaded from the ManiaPlanet integrated store . There are also several title packs based on all existing environments. This allows these environments to be combined. In order to be able to play them, however, all environments of the base game are required.
