TransPod Inc. is a Canadian company that develops high-speed technology and manufactures related transportation. TransPod vehicles are designed for a cruising speed of more than 1000 km / h in order to establish passenger traffic between cities that challenges and exceeds the speed performance of cruise flights. A fully electric drive is used to eliminate fossil fuels. According to Transpod, for the first time a faster and carbon dioxide-free alternative means of transport to airplanes and automobiles will be created.

The TransPod vehicle is designed like an airplane fuselage to carry passengers and cargo. The TransPod vehicles go through a system of tubes that is similar to a Hyperloop system , but with several changes. The TransPod tube system is designed for greater stability compared to the Hyperloop, as it is a magnetic levitation train and not an air cushion track.

In November 2016, TransPod successfully closed a $ 15 million financing round with Angelo Investments. Angelo Investments is an Italian high-tech holding group specializing in technologies for the rail, aerospace and aerospace industries. TransPod has since expanded from Toronto and currently has offices in Toulouse , France and Bari , Italy. The company plans to develop a commercial system by 2020.

In September 2017, TransPod published a peer-reviewed publication in the journal Procedia Engineering. The publication was presented at the EASD EURODYN 2017 conference and presents the physical principle of the TransPod system.

technology

The TransPod tube system is being developed to move vehicles at speeds of over 1000 km / h. The technology of the TransPod infrastructure presented in 2016 contains aerodynamic systems and propulsion systems that reduce friction compared to trains, cars and jets and transport passengers faster.

In order to achieve a drive without fossil fuel, TransPod vehicles use the advantages of the electrically driven linear induction motor technology with active real-time control and sensor room systems.

Vehicles for passenger transport should offer seating, while vehicles for freight transport are designed with a resilient interior. Every vehicle should have an aircraft-like fuselage structure, within which an internal atmospheric pressure is created through air circulation. Each vehicle capsule should include propulsion, guidance and control systems for speeds in excess of 1000 km / h within a protected duct. The tubes are interconnected to allow bi-directional vehicle movement.

The TransPod tube system differs from the Hyperloop concept proposed by Elon Musk's Hyperloop-Alpha white paper. In contrast to the Hyperloop, the TransPod system uses moving electromagnetic fields to propel the vehicles through stabilized hovering from the underside instead of air pressure.

TransPod envisages developments that in part go beyond those of Hyperloop. The TransPod system, announced by TransPods CTO Ryan Janzen, is being referred to as the "next generation" and "novel technology". The new technological components announced so far include state-of-the-art sensor and control systems and drive technology.

TransPod vehicles are repelled from the bottom of the pipe infrastructure and driven with moving electromagnetic fields. Time-varying electrical currents flow through windings on iron poles to generate magnetic fields that interact between the pipe fittings and the vehicle.

The TransPod vehicles for freight traffic should be able to transport payloads of 10–15 tons and be compatible with wooden pallets and various loading units such as LD3 containers and AAA containers .

The front of the vehicle includes an axial compressor (which looks similar to a jet engine, but is electrically powered) to reduce drag when moving through the tubes. Even when the air pressure is low, there is a small amount of air in the tube, which creates drag at high speed. The compressor diverts the air flow at high speed through a transport pipe in the vehicle, to the rear and expands through a rocket nozzle into the free pipe.

At high speed, the dynamic forces of the vehicle should be controlled by an internal management system. Deviations in the vehicle trajectory should be recorded and tracked using a combination of inertial sensors and optical sensors. TransPod's systems use novel inventions including sense space processing and real-time computer vision algorithms.

The all-electric TransPod system is being developed to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions. The system eliminates wasted fuel compared to conventional airliners, which use a large proportion of their fuel to climb, which is a significant proportion of the fuel used for short haul flights. The company's technology is designed to be compatible with renewable energies and is partially supplemented by regional grid connections. TransPod would like to use this to reduce global carbon emissions.

At the InnoTrans Rail Show 2016 in Berlin, TransPod presented its vehicle concept using Coelux technology - an artificial skylight that depicts the natural sunlight in the passenger pods in an extremely real way.

Financing & partnerships

In November 2016, TransPod raised $ 15 million in seed capital from Angelo Investments, who focus on long-term investments in high-tech sectors and work with companies in the design and execution phases from strategy to product development.

Angelo Investments offers TransPod complementary competencies and technical skills. As part of the partnership, the companies of the Angelo Investment Group, SITAEL, MERMEC and Blackshape Aircraft, will become important industrial partners of TransPod. With over 1,000 employees worldwide (around 650 of them engineers), a close partnership for the development and testing of the TransPod system is sought.

TransPod's Toronto office is located in the MaRS Center, within the MaRS Discovery District .

TransPod's Italian office in Bari, Italy is home to commercial and industrial partners of Angelo Investments. TransPod works closely with SITAEL, Blackshape and MERMEC for the development and testing of TransPod systems.

TransPod's French office is located in Toulouse. TransPod has also partnered with IKOS, an engineering firm, and REC Architecture, both companies also based in the Toulouse area.

In June 2017, TransPod announced a partnership with Liebherr-Aerospace to support the research, development and production of novel thermal systems for cabins and vehicles that were specially developed for the TransPod system to ensure maximum safety, efficiency and passenger comfort.

Corporate governance

Sebastien Gendron , CEO, co-founded TransPod in 2015 and has over 13 years experience as a senior engineer at global transportation companies such as Bombardier , Safran and Airbus .

Ryan Janzen , CTO, is a co-founder of TransPod with a focus on inventions and new innovations. Janzen has produced over 110 international lectures, media interviews and scientific publications on the Discovery Channel, Wired magazine and in the Wormhole. He founded the world's first aircraft PLC research. He also introduced a new branch of physics: Absement, a new branch of physics called Veillance Flux, and a new innovation called swarm modulation (equivalent to FM, AM and SM on a radio), in collaboration with wearable computing pioneer Steve Mann . Ryan Janzen's research and development has led to advances in acoustics, aerospace electronics, math and vehicle propulsion. Janzen is also a composer of orchestral music and was the first composer to create music for the hydraulophone .

Planned TransPod routes

TransPod develops routes around the world and designs line configurations between international cities. For example, in Canada, TransPod lines are being designed for Toronto-Montreal, Toronto-Windsor, the Toronto-Waterloo corridors in Ontario and Quebec, and the Calgary-Edmonton corridor in Alberta, Canada. TransPod is preparing to build a test track for the pod vehicles in Canada. This route will be expandable as part of an overall route until a combination of private and public funding is available to build the route.

In June 2017, the first drafts for a TransPod station were presented, which will be stationed in a future transport hub in downtown Toronto in the Port Lands district. In June 2017, the Toronto, Ontario and Canada governments announced a joint funding plan of $ 1.185 billion to revitalize this area with new developments and infrastructure. TransPods station design is developed in collaboration with REC Architecture.

Toronto Windsor Corridor

In July 2017, TransPod published an initial cost study showing the feasibility of building a Hyperloop line in southwestern Ontario between the cities of Windsor and Toronto. The Ontario government announced in May 2017 an environmental impact assessment for a high-speed line along this route for the same corridor. The study shows that a TransPod tube system would cost half the planned cost of a high-speed rail line along the same route, while operating at more than four times the maximum speed of the high-speed railroad.
