The Rhön School Gersfeld is a cooperative comprehensive school in the Fulda district in the city of Gersfeld (Rhön) in East Hesse .

The school

The school, located in the Rhön at the foot of the Wasserkuppe , is one of the geographically highest educational institutions in the State of Hesse . In the 2018/19 school year, 527 students will be taught by 55 teachers in the main, secondary and grammar school branches (G9 - without upper secondary school) under the motto "Live together - learn together". The three types of school are closely related in terms of space, organization and pedagogy and are intended to ensure permeability between the types of school. The school attaches importance to an intensive integration into the region and the regional reference in the classroom.

The Rhön School is part of the “Schulzentrum Gersfeld”, a neighborhood network of elementary, special needs and regular schools, which also includes the Anne Frank School and the Otto Lilienthal School in Gersfeld. It is certified as a school without racism .

History and Outlook

precursor

In 1595 there is the first entry in the oldest church book of the city of a combined school and church service of the school clerk (teacher) Lorentz-Schmidt, and the German city book names the year 1636 as the basic year of the school in Gersfeld. The lessons of that time took place held in so-called parish schools, the forerunners of elementary schools. Until 1739, only one single-class school is documented for the entire parish of Gersfeld. With the hiring of a second teacher from 1766, teaching became two-tier. In 1781 112 students were taught. From April 13, 1906, the school was finally four-class with a total of three teachers.

Rhön School

The building complex on the opposite side of the street from the main building, known today as the “old building” and still in use, was inaugurated on August 8, 1952 with the name “Rhönschule”. When the prerequisites were created in 1960 to expand the secondary and secondary school into a comprehensive school based on the type of school, the Rhönschule moved to the extension building above, which was completed in 1964, due to lack of space, today's Otto Lilienthal primary school. The number of pupils rose steadily, so that another new building was necessary. In 1978 the building complex of today's Rhön School was moved into on the right side of the street “Am Dammel”.

Until 1980 the Rhönschule was a connected secondary and secondary school, which from 1978 was expanded to include an upstream support level. With the establishment of a grammar school up to the 10th grade, the Rhönschule was transformed into a comprehensive school based on the type of school. With the decision of the school management of the Rhönschule (comprehensive school), the Otto-Lilienthal-Schule (elementary school) and the Anne-Frank-Schule (special school) in 2016 to continuously develop the "School Center Gersfeld", a constellation throughout Hesse has been created so far ( Status: 11/2018) one-time project with regard to inclusion and cooperation.

The communities of Gersfeld, Ebersburg and Poppenhausen belong to the catchment area of the Rhönschule . Many students now also come from neighboring Bavaria .

Marco Schumacher has been the headmaster of the Rhön School since October 2013.

State base of the Hessian Ski Association

Since June 20, 2012, the Rhönschule Gersfeld has been the official ski performance center for "Nordic skiing" and "Cross-country skiing" of the Hessian Ski Association (HSV), a state ski association of the German Ski Association . (DSV). The local ski club “SKG Gersfeld” supports the “Rhön Performance Center” and creates the framework conditions outside the school. In addition to the Rhön School in Gersfeld, schools in Schotten , Retterode and Willingen (Willingen / Usseln) are among the four established state bases of the HSV. The aim of this cooperation is to transfer as many of the participating students as possible to the state team of the Hessian Ski Association under pedagogical responsibility. Due to its geographical location in the Rhön, the Rhön School has sufficient snow and good trail conditions available in the winter months , so that regional decisions are also made here. In order to be able to offer the best possible training conditions even in the summer months, a roller ski track with a total length of 2.4 km is to be built, which is financed by the state of Hesse, the district of Fulda and the city of Gersfeld. The school is the secondary school sports center (SNZ) of the Rabanus-Maurus-Schule in Fulda, a "partner of competitive sports ".
