An OC Transpo bus

OC Transpo is the public transport operator of the state capital of Canada , Ottawa . The company operates regular buses, the Bus Rapid Transit network (Transitway) and the O-Train light rail . It also connects Ottawa with Gatineau in the neighboring province of Québec . An average of around 370,000 people use OC Transpo vehicles every day.

history

Ottawa's first public transport began with horse-drawn carriages in 1886. The horse-drawn carriage lines ran between New Edinburgh and the Chaudière Bridge . The horse-drawn carriage operation continued until 1981 after Thomas Ahearn founded the Ottawa Electric Railway Company . The private company offered electric tram connections that were heated and ran downtown.

In 1973 OC Transpo was finally founded.

Bus transport

Currently, almost all public transport in the National Capital Region is served by buses. OC Transpo has 1048 buses that offer several line connections. These are solo buses as well as double-decker and articulated buses from various manufacturers. Almost all buses are low-floor and equipped with automatic wheelchair ramps . Diesel engines and diesel hybrid systems are used as drive systems.

Transitway

Westboro Station, a typical transitway station

Transitway is a so-called bus rapid transit system . The buses run on their own route, which is closed to general traffic. The transitway has some level -free intersections, but is connected to the public roads in many places, as no bus line runs exclusively on the transitway. The stops on the transitway are the same as city train stations and usually offer pedestrian crossings or underpasses to reach the bus platforms.

The transitway network consists of a main branch that crosses the city center in a west-east direction. The main branch runs downtown on one-way streets that are also open to public transport (Slater Street to the west and Albert Street to the east).

Immediately east of the city center, behind the Mackenzie King Bridge station, the main branch bends south and branches off at Hurdman Station into two arms, one to the southeast to Trim Station and one to the south to Southkeys Station .

To the west, the Transitway runs partially together with the Macdonald Parkway before it also turns south at Lincoln Fields station and divides into two arms. One arm runs partially across Queensway and ends at Terry Fox Station in Kanata . The other arm runs essentially south along Woodroffe Avenue and ends at Fallowfield Station in Barrhaven .

Rail transport

An O-Train (Bombardier Talent) over the Rideau River

The name "O-Train" refers to the light rail system in Ottawa, which consists of two lines: the Trillium Line and the Confederation Line .

In 2001, a diesel-powered light rail system known as the O-Train was introduced as a pilot project . Currently, the O-Train runs north-south on the 8 km long Trillium Line between Bayview and Greenboro stations . Most of the line runs on existing freight tracks that cross the Carleton University campus, among other things . The Trillium Line is connected to the transitway at both terminus. Diesel multiple units of the type Coradia LINT 41 from Alstom (similar to the DB class 648) are used as passenger vehicles .

The Confederation Line , an electric light rail in a west-east direction, had been under construction since 2013 . It opened in September 2019. The route is 12.5 km long and runs from Tunney's Pasture to Blair , with a connection to the Trillium Line at Bayview station. A 2.5 km long section in the city center leads through a tunnel with three stations. The subsequent second stage of the tram expansion plans to extend the Confederation to Baseline and Bayshore in the west and to Place d'Orléans in the east. An extension of the Trillium Line south to Bowesville is also planned (with a possible branch to the airport ).

Tariff

OC Transpo is part of a tariff community with the Société de transport de l'Outaouais (STO) of neighboring Gatineau . Tickets are mutually recognized. There is a uniform tariff regardless of the destination or route for regular bus lines, transitways and the O-Train. Surcharges are levied for express lines and paratransit ( Para Transpo ). In addition to single tickets, multi-journey tickets and season tickets in the form of a Presto Card or as a U-Pass ( semester ticket) are also offered.

Depots

The company operates four depots that are spread across the city. The largest depot with the headquarters of the administration is located on the property 1500 St. Laurent Boulevard . Additional depots are located at 168 Colonnade Road (Merivale Garage) and Queensview Drive (Pinecrest Garage). A new maintenance / workshop center was opened in 2010 and is located at the Industrial Ave .
