The company Transports de l'Agglomération de Montpellier (TaM) is a public company that the public transport (public transport) in the French city of Montpellier operates and its suburbs. Until 2000 it was called Société montpelliéraine de transport urbain (SMTU). The main shareholder is the city of Montpellier.
The operation of the public transport was transferred to the private Compagnie des transports montpelliérains (CTM) in 1968 , the stationary systems remained the property of the city. There were only buses, the tram operation had already been stopped in 1949. In 1978 material and management were transferred to the SMTU, in which the city held the majority of the shares, for a period of 30 years. In 1982 the transport offer was expanded to the Montpellier district , an amalgamation of currently twelve municipalities. The following year, the SMTU took over the school bus service.
Between 1979 and 1993 the length of the route network tripled. Special night lines were set up and the city center was served by minibuses. Construction of the new tram began in the 1990s. In addition, the SMTU has been managing the bus station on the covered railway station of the state railway since 1988 (since 2005: Gare de Montpellier-Saint-Roch ) and has been renting out bicycles under the name Vill'à vélo since 1992 .
In 2000, the SMTU was renamed TAM (today: TaM) and line 1 of the Montpellier tram was opened. A second line was added in 2006, a third and a fourth line in 2012. A cooperation with the Transdev company began in the mid-2000s . The bike rental was 2007 Vélomagg.
The TaM bus network comprised 36 lines in 2016.
