history

The predecessor companies of transN emerged as follows:

19th century

On September 24, 1883, the " Compagnie du Chemin de fer Régional du Val-de-Travers " (RVT) opened the standard-gauge Travers – Fleurier – St-Sulpice line and on September 11, 1886, the Fleurier – Buttes line was opened. On July 26, 1889, the " Chemin de fer Ponts-Sagne-Chaux-de-Fonds " (PSC) opened the meter-gauge railway line La Chaux-de-Fonds via La Sagne to Les Ponts-de-Martel. On September 1, 1890, the " Compagnie des Chemins de fer Régional des Brenets " (RdB) opened the meter-gauge railway line Le Locle - Les Brenets. On October 26, 1890 (EP) the company “Funiculaire Ecluse – Plan” (EP) put the funicular of the same name into operation. On September 16, 1892, the "Régional Neuchâtel-Cortaillod-Boudry" (NCB) opened a meter-gauge overland steam tram and, in the city of Neuchâtel, a cogwheel steam tram from the port to the train station. In 1898 the rack was removed and the line electrified, followed in 1902 by the electrification of the remaining line, which is the only one still in operation today. On December 22, 1894, the company "Tramway Neuchâtel-Saint-Blaise" (NStB) opened the Neuchâtel-St-Blaise horse-drawn tram, which switched to electrical operation as early as 1897.

The company called itself from 1901 "Compagnie des Tramways de Neuchâtel" (TN), but it introduced a trolleybus operation as early as 1940 , which by 1976 completely replaced the tram. The company name changed to “ Compagnie des Transports en commun de Neuchâtel et environs ” (TN). On January 1, 1897, the company "Tramways de la Chaux-de-Fonds" (TC) opened a meter-gauge tramway that gave way to the La Chaux-de-Fonds trolleybus operation in 1949/50 . From 1948 the company also operated bus routes and subsequently changed the name to “Compagnie des Transports en commun, La Chaux-de-Fonds”. On February 23, 1903, the “Compagnie du Chemin de fer Régional du Val-de-Ruz et Compagnie des Autotransport du Val-de-Ruz”, from 1947 “Compagnie des Transports du Val-de-Ruz ” (VR), opened the Meter-gauge tramway Les Hauts-Geneveys – Villiers , which was replaced in 1948 by the Val-de-Ruz trolleybus company , which also operated a route to Neuchâtel from 1949 to 1969. In 1920 the first bus line was opened. Since 1984 the VR has been a pure bus company. On September 17, 1910, the “Chemin de fer Neuchâtel – Chaumont SA (Tramway & Funiculaire)” (NC) opened the funicular from La Coudre to the Chaumont. A tram that belonged to the same company but was operated by TN led to the valley station. City buses began operating in Le Locle on December 6, 1954, and the «Autobus Le Locle (ALL)» (ALL) company was subsequently founded.

Mergers

  • Already in 1901 NStB and NCB merged to become TN. In 1906 this took over the EP and in 1943 the NC.
  • From 1987 onwards, RVT, CMN and VR, which had been under the same management for years, appeared under the common name of «Transports Régionaux Neuchâtelois». In 1999 these companies merged to form " TRN SA ". In 2005 the city bus operation of La Chaux-de-Fonds, the TC, was merged into the TRN.
  • On January 1, 1998, TC took over the city bus operations from Le Locle, ALL.
  • In 2012, TRN and TN finally merged to form transN, whose official initials and internationally valid vehicle keeper license plates are TRN (because a maximum of five letters are possible).
