history

After the successful Carnation Revolution in 1974, the Portuguese economy was completely nationalized. For this reason, the Portuguese government at the time decided to unite all previous ferry companies in the Lisbon area into a single, state-owned company. In 1975 the new company Transtejo, EP was founded from the former companies Sociedade Marítima de Transportes , Empresa de Transportes Tejo , Sociedade Nacional Motonaves , Sociedade Jerónimo Rodrigues Durão , Herd and Sociedade Damásio, Vasques e Santos . In the seventies and eighties, the Transtejo attached particular importance to the modernization of the ferry fleet and the ferry terminals ( Cais do Sodré , Cacilhas ). In 1992, Transtejo changed its corporate form and switched from a state-owned company ( empresa pública , EP for short) to a stock corporation ( sociedade anónima , SA).

In 1993, the national railway company spun Caminhos-de-ferro portugueses, EP its ferry service between Lisbon ferry terminal Terreiro do Paço and Barreiro station , the operational part of the Linha do Sul was in the new company Soflusa - Sociedade Fluvial de Transportes, SA from . In 2001 the state-owned Transtejo bought the other ferry operator, so that to this day all ferry connections between the two banks of the Tejo are operated solely by the Transtejo company. In order to maintain the sometimes popular name Soflusa , the company calls itself Transtejo & Soflusa in an effective way .

Since 1998, the Transtejo introduced an additional high-speed catamaran service in addition to the usual ferry service (also called Cacilheiros or ferry in Portuguese ). Today the joint venture operates ferry services between three Lisbon ferry terminals (Belém, Cais do Sodré, Terreiro do Paço) and six ferry terminals in the Margem Sul do Tejo (Trafaria, Porto Brandão, Cacilhas, Seixal, Barreiro and Montijo). It is possible to transfer cars between Cais do Sodré and Cacilhas; Due to the parallel bridge Ponte 25 de Abril , only a few drivers take advantage of this option.
