The Trappist Abbey Étoile Notre-Dame has been a Beninese monastery in Parakou , Department Borgou , Archdiocese of Parakou since 1960 .
history
The French monastery of Gardes founded the monastery L'Étoile Notre-Dame ("Maria Stern") in 1960 in the then Republic of Dahomey (today: Benin ). In 1962 Archbishop Bernardin Gantin laid the foundation stone for the church. In the same year the monastery was visited by the presidents of Dahomey ( Coutoucou Hubert Maga ) and Senegal ( Léopold Sédar Senghor ). In 1966 it was elevated to the status of an abbey .
