The Trappistinnenabtei Belval was from 1893 to 2012, a French monastery of Trappist nuns in Troisvaux in Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise , Pas-de-Calais , Roman Catholic Diocese of Arras . (It should not be confused with the Augustinian Canons Abbey of Belval au Bois-des-Dames (1120–1790) in Belval-Bois-des-Dames, Ardennes department ).

history

At the invitation of the local pastor Hippolyte Trannoy in Troisvaux, 40 kilometers north-west of Arras , the Trappist women of La Coudre monastery founded the Notre Dame de Belval monastery in 1893 , which they placed under the patronage of Saint Benoît Joseph Labre , who lived in the neighboring community of Conteville-en-Ternois had lived. They earned their living by making a Trappist cheese ( Trappiste de Belval ). The monastery survived a flood (1895), two fires (1902, 1909), the evacuation during the First World War and a bombing on February 3, 1944. In 1954 new buildings were inaugurated to accommodate the 60 nuns. The subsequent decline in vocations forced the monastery to be dissolved in 2012, the last inhabitants of which, together with the monasteries of La Grâce-Dieu (Franche-Comté) and Ubexy monastery , moved to the Igny monastery , which was renamed Notre Dame du Val d'Igny accepted. The buildings have passed into the hands of a sponsoring association.
