Traugott Friedrich Benedict (* 1756 in Annaberg ; † October 25, 1833 there ) was a German pedagogue and philologist.

Life

He was the son of an Annaberg merchant and councilor. After attending the local Latin school, Benedict studied theology and philology in Leipzig , which he completed with a master's degree. From 1780 he held lectures at the university as a private lecturer. In 1783 he was able to take up his first job as a catechist and Saturday preacher at St Thomas in Leipzig, but in May he moved to the Torgau lyceum as rector . For this occasion he wrote the text: " Prolus de imaginibus, Romanae nobilitatis insignibus ". Due to the war-related closure or relocation of the Torgau Lyceum in 1813, due to the terrible conditions in the city, Benedict moved to the Lyceum of his hometown Annaberg as rector in 1814, where he then stayed. On May 5th, 1833, his 50th anniversary was celebrated here with great effort; on this occasion he was awarded the golden civil merit medal.

Benedict edited numerous textbooks, wrote countless programs as well as writings on ancient studies, on Greeks and Romans, public education as well as morality and religion. He also wrote interpretations of Latin texts. Bendedict wrote in 1799 about his long-term place of work in Torgau: " Torgavise: In Officina Kursiane ".

His son Traugott Wilhelm Gustav Benedict (1785–1862) made a name for himself as a doctor and educator.
