Traugott Wilhelm Gustav Benedict

Traugott Wilhelm Gustav Benedict (born July 9, 1785 in Torgau , † May 11, 1862 in Breslau ) was a German doctor and university professor . He is one of the early ophthalmologists .

He was the son of the Torgau Rector of the Lyceum Friedrich Traugott Benedict (born July 3, 1759 in Annaberg; † October 25, 1833 there). He had studied at the University of Leipzig, had acquired the academic degree of a master's degree and then worked as a private lecturer. In 1783 he was rector of the Torgau Lyceum and in 1814 rector of the Lyceum in Annaberg. As a philologist, he had made a name for himself through his numerous classic editions.

Life

Son Benedict began studying at the University of Leipzig in 1802 , where he acquired the academic degree of a baccalaureus . In 1808 he continued his studies at the University of Vienna . After Leipzig returned doctorate he in 1809 to Dr. med.

He then worked as a general practitioner in Chemnitz . In 1812 he went to the newly founded Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University in Breslau . He worked in a department where typhus broke out. Sixteen doctors became infected, Benedict was the only one who survived. Professor of surgery since 1813 and director of the surgical and ophthalmological institute in 1815. For the academic year 1842/43 he was elected rector of the university. He died at the age of 77. He was buried in the Great Cemetery in Wroclaw.
