Trematochromis benthicola ( synonyms : Ctenochromis benthicola , Trematochromis schreyeni Poll, 1987 ) is an endemic species of cichlid from the northern part of Lake Tanganyika .

features

Trematochromis benthicola is about 21.5 cm long and has a high-backed, laterally slightly flattened body and a very protruding mouth. The body height is 31.8 to 41.1% of the standard length , the head length 35.5 to 39.4% of the standard length. The sides of the body are covered with comb scales, the throat is scaled, as is the base of the dorsal and anal fin. On the caudal fin there are scales in the section near the body between the individual fin rays . The paired fins are unscaled. Characteristic of the species is a thick sensory canal with large, widely spaced pores on the six bones of the eye ring (infraorbitalia). Both jaws are covered with several rows of single-pointed teeth. The outer row is regular, with the inner three to six rows, which are occupied by smaller teeth, the teeth in the front section of the upper jaw are arranged irregularly. The upper and lower side lines are separated by two rows of scales.

Trematochromis benthicola is a mouthbrooder in which, as in most cases, the female does the breeding business. The strongly protruding mouth could indicate a plankton eater.

Systematics

The species was described as Haplochromis benthicola by Matthes in 1962 , but was placed in the genus Ctenochromis by Poll in 1986 . In 1987 the same author described another species of cichlid with the same type locality as Trematochromis schreyeni . This was synonymous in 2006 with "Ctenochromis" benthicola . Since "Ctenochromis" benthicola does not show the diagnostic characteristics of the genus Ctenochromis (crest scales below the upper sideline, round scales above), it is increasingly popular in recent publications to use the generic name from Poll's description of 1987 for "Ctenochromis" benthicola , the so that it comes under the scientific name Trematochromis benthicola . Trematochromis is probably the sister genus of Cyphotilapia and thus belongs to the tribe Cyphotilapiini.
