The listed staircase from 1734 is located at Brunnenstrasse 1 in Pachten , a district of Dillingen .

Furnishing

The building originally consisted of a residential part and an economic part that served as a barn. The economic section, which was badly damaged in the Second World War, was unused for decades. Today there is a newly built house in its place. The vaulted cellar ceilings protrude so far from the ground that quite high staircases on the front and back lead to the corresponding entrances. These stairs gave the house its name. The shape of the cellar ceilings suggests an older previous building, the simpler upper windows to a later addition. The richly designed portal with holy niche bore the year 1734. Other sandstone decorations were lost. A smokehouse is integrated into the gable end. A flat cross vault decorates the staircase. An unusual round well shaft made of sandstone led from the cellar through the barrel vault to the first floor. The stone pillars of the courtyard gate were provided with triangular gable tops. These were decorated with ornaments and an ox head.

Original use

Traditions and the complex living quarters against the background of the modest rural environment indicate that it was used as a tithe barn for the Beckingen Commandery . Other features, such as the grating on the back, speak for its further use as a courthouse and prison.

French Revolution

After the flight of the last Commander of the Teutonic Order in Beckingen, the house was auctioned off by the French military administration. The dissolution of the order took place in accordance with the Napoleonic decree of April 24, 1809.

Current condition

The protection was able to prevent further deterioration after the war. Plans to use this house or the old castle as a museum to house the many finds from the Roman Contiomagus could not be implemented. This museum was set up in 1990 in Fischerstrasse not far from the stairwell .
