The stairs district is a quarter within the Hamburg district of Blankenese , about 10 kilometers west of the city center. It is bordered by the Süllberg , Baurs Park and the Hessepark and in the south by the banks of the Elbe . There are only a few passable roads in it; the majority of the houses can only be reached on foot via more than 5000  steps , which are spread over various stairs .

Location, architecture and problems

The location on the Elbe slope is described in travel guides as "Mediterranean" and the view from the upper properties extends to the Altes Land in good weather .

The former fishing village is characterized by a large number of old buildings , but after the Second World War, a number of historical “Tweehüser” (simple semi-detached houses ) were demolished and replaced by modern buildings that changed the character of the district. Intact fishermen's houses can still be found today at Am Hang 1, Bremers Weg 1 and 5a (all around 1850) and Op'n Kamp 9 (built in 1786). Moderately modernized houses with “Lüttwohnungen” (small dwellings) for “elderly people” are located in streets Rutsch 1 and 2 as well as Krumdal 14 and 18 (built around 1800). In the course of the analyzes for an upcoming renovation, it turned out that the house at Elbterrasse 6 was built in 1570, making it the oldest surviving house in the Altona district and one of the oldest houses in Hamburg.

A particular challenge is the garbage collection in the stairs district, as this cannot be approached by the vehicles of the Hamburg city cleaning service. That is why there is bag removal as a regular form of waste disposal. According to the Senate, there is no alternative to bag removal in the medium term.

Famous residents

The artists Paul Kayser and Paul Friedrichsen as well as the writers Charitas Bischoff and Hans Leip lived in the stairs district .
