Tri Top (own spelling: TRi TOP) is a beverage syrup from Germany that can be prepared with sparkling water systems, mineral or drinking water. The producer was once the Union German Food Works (later Unilever) . TRi TOP has been part of DrinkStar GmbH since 2010.

Bottling

The product was originally bottled in glass bottles that looked like the prototypes of the lava lamps from the 1970s. Some sources say that the inventor of the astro lava lamp, Edward Craven Walker , even used an original tri-top bottle (in English "tree top") as a model for its shape. The product is now filled in deposit-free PET non-returnable bottles. The rather thick syrups are made on the basis of sugar and come in many eye-catching colors. In the 1980s, the cult brand Tri Top disappeared from the market due to a lack of demand. The brand has been on the market again since 2003.

Trademark rights

When the trademark protection for the Tri Top brand expired, the company DS-Produkte GmbH , based in Stapelfeld near Hamburg , secured the brand name and protected the brand. Compared to the classic Tri Top of the 1970s, the new bottles have now been manufactured by the subsidiary Tri Top GmbH from break-proof PET plastic and the recipes have been given a combination of sugar and low-calorie sweeteners . In 2003 there were around ten different flavors, now there are 14 (as of 2020) and according to company information up to 5 million bottles have been sold. It started with six flavor variations that were developed by the Symrise company .

The company Tri Top was sold in 2007 to the financial investor Absolute Opportunity Investment, who bundled the company together with the purchase idea under the umbrella of Aquellness. In 2008 Tri Top employed nine people and generated sales of 5 million euros. The holding company, renamed The Tap Cap Company, including the subsidiaries Kauf-Idea and Tri Top, filed for bankruptcy in mid-July 2009 . During the bankruptcy process, creditors asserted remaining trademark rights to Tri Top. The Rosenheim beverage specialist DrinkStar, a subsidiary of Symrise in Holzminden, has owned the trademark rights to Tri Top since 2010.

advertising

In the mid-1970s, actor and comedian Christian Tramitz played a living tri-top bottle. Shortly thereafter, there was a commercial featuring the Cancan from Jacques Offenbach .

After around 40 years of abstinence from TV, Tri Top was shown for the first time in 2017 as part of a sponsorship of the RTL program Ich bin ein Star, gets me out of here.
