Tribonema is an algae - genus from the class of yellow-green algae (Xanthophyceae).

description

Tribonema forms unbranched threads with a diameter of 1.5 to 35 µm, which consist of cylindrical cells . Their cell nucleus is in the middle, in the periphery there are usually numerous green plastids without pyrenoids . Reserve carbohydrates are deposited outside the plastids in the cytoplasm; there is no starch formation. The cell walls consist of two H-shaped halves, which can be seen as open half-cylinders at the thread ends.

Reproduction

The asexual multiplication takes place by the formation of zoospores carrying two unequal flagella. To release the zoospores, the two cell halves unfold and the thread breaks up into two sub-threads with open semicylinders at the end.

Sexual reproduction is unknown.

distribution

Tribonema lives in stagnant, less often flowing waters, often also in moors; Tribonema viride can also be found in moist soil.
