Trichophyton equinum is askin fungus that colonizesthe horny substance and primarilyaffects horses ( zoophilic dermatophyte ). Infection of humans is possible, but rare. The teleomorph is unknown.
In KOH - maceration of infected hairs numerous outside fitting find spores at the hair base. Spore chains and individual hyphae can be detected towards the tip of the hair . The arthrospores are 3 to 6.5 µm in size.
Disc- shaped colonies form on a Sabouraud glucose agar and reach a diameter of 4 cm within two weeks. They have a white, downy surface and a bright yellow border. The underside is also bright yellow, but changes to brown in older cultures. The addition of nicotinic acid has an inhibiting effect on mycelial growth , but promotes the formation of conidia and pigmentation. Microscopically, the narrow hyphae are adjacent to 1–3 × 3–4 µm microconidia. Club-shaped macroconidia with a smooth, thin wall and three or four chambers can appear on potato glucose agar.
