Trichopitys is an extinct, Paleozoic seed plant and is considered to be the oldest representative of the Ginkgoales . She is the only member of the Trichopityaceae family.

features

The leaves sit on long shoots in a spiral arrangement. They are not flattened and do not have a separate petiole . They are up to 10 cm long and divided into four to eight segments.

On the vegetative shoot axes there are sections that form fertile structures.

The seed-bearing shoots sit in leaf axils and have a poorly defined axis. The axis carries two to six spirally arranged branches, each of which carries a backward curved ovule . The ovules are small, around 6 mm long, flattened, orthotropic and inverted. The seed-bearing axes morphologically resemble aberrant seed carriers, as they can rarely occur in Ginkgo .

distribution

Trichopitys is only known from finds in Lodève in the Hérault department in southern France. The finds come from the Lower Permian ( Autunium ).

Systematics

Only the type species Trichopitys heteromorpha is known.

Trichopitys is generally located near the base of the ginkgoales . However, the classification is different. Zhou (2009) leads the genus in a monotypic family Trichopityaceae. This was set up by Meyen in 1987. The family is part of the ginkgoales.

Archangelky and Cúneo had placed Trichopitys in 1990 together with Dicranophyllum and Polyspermophyllum in an order Dicranophyllales. Taylor, Taylor and Krings lead the genus in 2009 without a more precise classification as Paleozoic representatives of the Ginkgophyta .
