Gaston de Saporta
Marquis de Louis Charles Joseph Gaston Saporta (born July 28, 1823 in Saint-Zacharie , † January 26, 1895 in Aix-en-Provence ) was a French paleobotanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Saporta ".
Life
Saporta studied at the Jesuit College in Freiburg with Philippe Matheron (1807–1899). As a student of Adolphe Brongniart, he published on numerous tertiary florals from the Franco-Belgian region and supplemented those of the then leading paleobotanists Oswald Heer and Constantin von Ettingshausen with his work .
De Saporta was instrumental in supporting Darwin's theory of evolution in the field of paleobotany.
He wrote several important works such as Plantes jurassiques (1883–1885) and Origine paleontologique des abres cultivés ou utilisés par l'homme (1888). His work Le monde des plantes avant l'apparition de l'homme was translated into German by Carl Vogt (1881).
Regional focal points of de Saporta's investigations were the flora of Aix-en-Provence, Manosque , Sézanne and Gelinden . The Paleocene flora of Gelinden plays an important role in his considerations on the formation of the tertiary polar vegetation.
In 1876 de Saporta became a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences . In 1885 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
