Anton Hrodegh (born October 28, 1875 in Schiltingeramt near Langenlois , † June 18, 1926 in Gars am Kamp ) was a Catholic priest and in the last ten years of his life also a prehistoric .

Life

In his spare time, Anton Hrodegh studied with Oswald Menghin , who later became professor at the Prehistory Institute of the University of Vienna , majoring in Prehistory and received his doctorate on July 21, 1917. The foundations for his research and publication activities were mainly the collections of Candidus Ponz, Imperial Knight of Engelshofen ( Rosenburg ) and by Johann Krahuletz ( Eggenburg ). Hrodegh was one of the founders of the Kamptal Museum in the city of Langenlois , which also owes him numerous finds.

Through his active publication activity (around 30 specialist and local history articles), which was almost exclusively limited to the Waldviertel, and through numerous lectures, he achieved a high level of awareness at the time. As a curator of the Federal Monuments Office in Vienna, he was able to successfully educate the rural population in terms of monument conservation. He was the first to work scientifically on the Slavic settlement of the Waldviertel and in particular the Kamptal . He also knew how to enforce his results in relation to nationalist endeavors.

His main work is the "prehistory" of the Waldviertel , published a year before his death, which is still a cult book in local circles. Hrodegh is considered to be one of the founders of modern research on prehistory in Austria. Most of his research results on the Neolithic and the Early Middle Ages ( Slavs ) are still current.
