The Type X , also known as "X-Wagen", is the name of the third generation of high-floor traction vehicles for the Vienna underground . It will be produced by Siemens from 2018 and will be delivered gradually from 2020. The series represents the successor to the Type V series and will replace the older Silver Arrows ( Type U ). It is to be used in the entire Vienna underground network except on the U6 line .
General
In September 2017, the contract for the delivery of 34 new underground trains (204 cars) was signed between Wiener Linien and Siemens. There is also a maintenance agreement and the option for eleven additional trains. The total order volume is 550 million euros.
The six-car type X trains should be continuously accessible and air-conditioned, and they should also have a new passenger information system. The design of the trains should be based on the previous model, with the appearance of the inside and outside being further developed. For example, there is a transparent partition between the passenger compartment and driver's cab with a view of the route. Thanks to the newly created seat layout, they offer higher passenger capacity, better passenger flow and better access to more wheelchair spaces and multi-purpose areas.
Delivery began in July 2020 with a pre-series train, and the last vehicle in the batch is due to be delivered in 2030. The sets are expected to be on the lines U1 , U2 , U3 and U4 from 2022 in the usual semi-automatic or manual operation with a driver. When the new U5 line opens in 2024, the trains will run there fully automatically .
