The types T and T 1 denote a new generation of low-floor vehicles of the Vienna Metro . They were built by Bombardier Vienna Rail Vehicles between 1992 and 2014 and run exclusively on the U6 line , as this is the only Vienna subway line to draw power from an overhead line instead of a lateral conductor rail .

General

When one wanted to integrate the belt line and the connecting arch of the former Viennese electric light rail into the subway network, a conversion for the use of the Silver Arrows did not seem feasible due to the structural conditions. Therefore, when converting to the U6 line, basic elements were taken over from the Stadtbahn, including the overhead line operation, the platform height and the signaling and safety technology.

Seats at the end of the car without a driver's cab, under the cover to the right is the auxiliary cab.

Therefore, new vehicles had to be procured for the U6. From 1995 Bombardier Vienna Rail Vehicles (BWS) delivered 2.65 meter wide, 26.8 meter long six-axle double-articulated low-floor type T wagons. The end car bodies attached to the middle section each run on a motor bogie.

The low-floor wagon floor between the entrances is raised one step above the motor bogies and can be reached via a ramp. The difference in level can be seen from the outside at the lower edge of the window. The middle parts run on loose gear sets controlled by the articulation angle of the adjacent joint .

In each car there is only one full-fledged driver's cab that is separated from the passenger compartment. At the other end of the car, a covered auxiliary cab is installed on the right in the direction of travel. In regular operation, at least two, but mostly four, cars are coupled to a train, so the non-existent driver's cabs do not represent any noticeable restriction on use.

For a quick change of passengers there is a double-leaf swing-sliding door on each side in each car body. The cars are also equipped with direction indicators and brake lights for operation in the tram network. However, these facilities are only used for transfer trips to the main workshop in Simmering . Similar vehicles run as the 400 series on the Vienna – Baden local railway , but there as fully equipped and thus individually usable bidirectional cars . The WLB wagons are a bit narrower and there is no door in the middle section.

Until the commissioning of the series T 1 cars, the type T vehicles ran in mixed operation with the older type E 6 / c 6 light rail vehicles . For this, the type T wagons were delivered with the multiple control of the type E 6 / c 6 wagons transmitted via fiber optic cables.

Since the end of 2008, only T and T 1 trains from Bombardier have been running on the U6 . For joint operation, type T multiple control was adapted to type T 1 after types E 6 and c 6 were eliminated . The type T and T 1 cars have video surveillance, electronic indoor and outdoor displays and air conditioning. The air conditioning systems were only retrofitted in the type T wagons when the conversion was completed in July 2020.

The type T and T 1 cars are the predecessors of the Flexity Swift family of vehicles .

Color scheme and design

The external design of the type T and T 1 railcars corresponds to the color scheme of Wiener Linien. However, the type T 1 sets are painted light gray instead of white like the type T railcars.

General overhaul of the T

In the past few years all type T trains have been overhauled. The following changes were made to the vehicles:

  1. As a temporary solution, "ventilation gills" and sun protection films were installed on the windows, which were supposed to ensure more air circulation and more reflected heat, since the U6 is largely at a high altitude in the summer of over 40 degrees. By July 2020, air conditioning systems were retrofitted in all trains and the ventilation gills were removed in the course of this. Air conditioning retrofitted.
  2. Repainted in the light gray color scheme of the T 1 .
  3. New seating, which is identical to the T 1 .
  4. Change to the engine control, which brings a less shrill acceleration process with it.
