description

Trifolium scutatum is a one-year , herbaceous plant reached, the plant height 10-30 centimeters. The ascending stem axis is densely hairy and branches out.

The leaves are alternate, but the uppermost are opposite. The leaves are dreifedrig, the individual pinna between 1 and 1.4 inches long and 0.5 to 0.8 inches wide. The blades are inversely egg-shaped and taper towards the base. The leaf margin is finely indented in the upper part. They are hairy when pressed down. The tip is rounded. The stipules are more or less like paper, slightly hairy, overgrown with dark Venatur and some with stem axis and leaf stalks. The free part of the stipules about as long as the fused part. It is lanceolate or sickle-shaped and bristly.

The inflorescences are on inflorescence axes that grow out of the tips of the shoot axes. They are 1.8 to 2.3 inches long and between 1.3 and 1.8 inches wide. They are broadly ovate or vice versa. As the fruit ripens, the inflorescence increases and becomes more spherical. The cup is between 6 and 7 millimeters long. In the lower part it is tubular, widening slightly towards the top and 10-annoying. At first the calyx is slightly hairy, but later it becomes bald. The calyx teeth are of unequal length, the lower ones about twice as long as the upper ones and lanceolate to sickle-shaped. All calyx teeth are spotted on the roas <?> And protrude when the fruit is ripe. When the fruit ripens, the calyx tube closes with two thickenings from which short hairs grow. The crown is white to cream in color with pink tips on the boats . It is 2 to 3 times longer than the chalice. The flag is about 1.5 times longer than the shuttle and wing.

The solitary legumes are paper-like in the lower part and thickened in the upper part. The seeds are about 2.5 millimeters long and yellow in color.

The flowering period extends from March to May.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

distribution

Trifolium scutatum occurs in fields and under bushes on chalky soil. The distribution area is in Asia Minor and the Middle East and includes Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Jordan. Natural occurrences also exist in Libya.

ecology

The species is self-pollinating . After the fruit ripens, it is not a single fruit that falls, but the entire inflorescence with several fruits. To do this, he breaks off the stem axis. These pods are usually too heavy to blow away. This spreading strategy is called synaptospermia .
