Trilogy is the fourth album by British progressive rock band Emerson, Lake and Palmer . It was recorded at Advision Studios in London and published in 1972.
Music and cover
Unlike the previous album Pictures at an Exhibition includes Trilogy just a neuarrangiertes piece: Hoedown from the ballet Rodeo by Aaron Copland . Hoedown and The Sheriff were part of the live program of Emerson, Lake and Palmer for a long time and can also be heard on the live album Welcome back ... from 1974. The last track on the album, Abaddon's Bolero , shows similarities with the Boléro by Maurice Ravel with its crescendo and the appearance of more and more instruments ( realized here through overdubs ) .
The hinged cover was designed by the British company Hipgnosis . On the front there is a painting of the band members in three-quarter profile by Phil Grennell, on the inside there is a photo montage that shows the band multiplied in an autumn forest.
reception
The album was number 2 on the UK charts, number 5 on the Billboard 200 , and the song From the Beginning , released as a single, reached number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 .
François Couture from allmusic wrote that the group here has grown in maturity compared to the previous albums what it has lost in “raw energy”. For Prog-Rock newbies it is a less threatening entry. He gave the album four stars out of five.
