Works Volume II is the eighth album by British progressive rock band Emerson, Lake and Palmer . It was released in 1977 and peaked at number 37 on the US charts.

Songs

The album was released in the same year as its predecessor, Works Volume I , but contains pieces that had already been recorded for the album Brain Salad Surgery but not yet released. There is also a new version of I Believe in Father Christmas , which was released as a single by Greg Lake in 1975 and was number two in the UK singles chart.

Brain Salad Surgery, When the Apple Blossoms… and Tiger in a Spotlight are short progressive rock pieces that were also featured on previous albums. As with the first three pages of the previous album, the remaining pieces can be assigned to the individual musicians, with Keith Emerson playing his way through the American music history of the early 20th century with orchestral accompaniment; a swinging adaptation of the folk song ´ Show Me the Way to Go Home , the Maple Leaf Rag and the Boogie-Woogie Honky Tonk Train Blues by Meade Lux Lewis as well as the own barrelhouse shake-down that goes with this series .

reception

Allmusic's David Ross Smith thinks the album is “highly underrated”, praises Lakes and Palmer's “incredibly strong performance” and considers Emerson's contribution to be “solid and creative, but old-fashioned”, which for him was the reason why the band no longer exist could.
