William M. 'Trip' Hawkins III (born December 28, 1953 in Pasadena , California ) is an American entrepreneur and game developer. He is the founder of Electronic Arts , the 3DO Company and Digital Chocolate .

biography

Hawkins was the director of strategy and marketing at Apple in 1982 when he founded Electronic Arts (EA). Under Hawkins, the company rose to become the world's largest game developer and publisher. Even after being replaced at the top by the merger of Activision and Vivendi Universal Games to form Activision Blizzard in 2008, the company founded by Hawkins continues to be one of the most successful computer game publishers.

In 1991 Hawkins handed over management of EA to Larry Probst . Although he continued to serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors, he founded The 3DO Company that same year , where he served as CEO. When 3DO went bankrupt in 2003, Hawkins started a new software company called Digital Chocolate . The company primarily develops mobile phone games.

In 2005, Hawkins was inducted into the Hall of Fame for the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences as the eighth person .

He lives in San Mateo , California with his third wife and four children .
