Tristramella sacra ( Syn .: Chromis paterfamiliaris , Hemichromis sacra ) is an extinct species of cichlid that was endemic to the Israeli Sea of ​​Galilee .

features

Tristramella sacra becomes a maximum of 28 cm long. The head takes up 37.5 to 43.9% of the total length. The mouth is large, the lower jaw protrudes. In the upper jaw they have two to three rows of teeth at the front and two rows of teeth on the sides. All jaw teeth are conical. The lower pharyngealia is only slightly longer than it is wide and has a central row of large molar-like teeth. Males grow faster and get bigger. On the lower branch of the first gill arch there are 10 to 13 gill rakes . Their fins are larger than those of the females.

The fish are olive-green on the back, and silvery with bluish spots on the sides and belly. Some elongated dark spots are sometimes visible on the sides of the body. The fins are yellowish.

Way of life

Tristramella sacra lived on the shores of the Sea of ​​Galilee and in springs near the lake. The species is omnivorous and mainly fed on phytoplankton , occasionally also on small fish. The breeding season lasted from April to July. The fish were mouthbrooders . Spawning took place in sand troughs or in reed beds. A clutch contained a maximum of 250 eggs.

Taxonomy

The species was in 1865 by the German zoologist Albert Günther under the scientific name Hemichromis Sacra described and 1942 type species of the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas introduced species tristramella .
