Tristramella is a two species of fish from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae). It occurs in the Middle East , in the Sea of Galilee , Lake Chula in the Upper Galilee and in the Jordan region and is thusthe second purely Middle Eastern genus of cichlidsafter its sistergenus Iranocichla . Populations in swamps and ponds around Damascus have become extinct. The genus was named in honor of the English clergyman, Bible scholar, explorer and ornithologist Henry Baker Tristram .
features
The different species and subspecies of the genus Tristramella reach a length of 13 to 28 cm. In most cases the fish have 29 vertebrae, more rarely 28 or 30. Characteristic of the genus is the special shape of the articular surface between the skull and the upper pharyngealia and the dentition of the pharyngealia. The front end of the swim bladder is supported by a bony apophysis that extends from the third to fifth vertebrae, with the fourth vertebra as the main support. Most of the time this structure is very asymmetrical and the left and right sides of the vertebrae have quite different proportions in it.
As with all cichlids of the tribe Oreochromini , Tristramella species are mouthbrooders .
