Tristramella simonis ( Syn .: Tristramella intermedia , T. magdelainae ) is a species of cichlid that occurs in the Israeli Sea of ​​Galilee and in the Muzairib, a tributary of the Jordan. A population in the former Chula lake has disappeared when it was drained.

Tristramella simonis becomes a maximum of 25 cm long. The head takes up 35.3 to 41.1% of the standard length . The fish have three to four rows of teeth in each jaw. The teeth of the outer rows are two-pointed, those of the inner rows are three-pointed. The lower pharyngealia is only slightly longer than it is wide and has two to four rows of enlarged teeth in the middle. The lateral and anterior pharyngeal teeth are very close together. On the lower branch of the first gill arch there are 10 to 12 gill rakes . Fish caught are colored olive-brown on the back and sides, they are lighter on the belly. On the sides of the body they have eight vertical bands, which are more pronounced in young fish than in adults. There is a black spot on the gill cover.

Way of life

Tristramella simonis is omnivorous and feeds mainly on phytoplankton , higher plants and occasionally zooplankton . The breeding season lasts from March to August. Each specimen spawns two to three times during this time. The fish are mouthbrooders .

Taxonomy

The species was the German zoologist 1864 Albert Günther under the scientific name Chromis simonis described and 1942 by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas introduced species tristramella assigned.
