Iranocichla hormuzensis is a species of fish from the cichlid family (Cichlidae). It occurs in Iran in the catchment area of the Mehran, which flows north of the island of Qeschm into the Strait of Hormuz . Genetic differences and differences in the male brood coloration led to the description of a second Iranocichla species ( Iranocichla persa ). A third form, which occurs in the Kol River between the distribution areas of Iranocichla hormuzensis and Iranocichla persa , resembles the brood color of the male Iranocichla hormuzensis , but is geneticallycloserto Iranocichla persa . The Iranocichla species are the result of an allopatric speciation .
features
Iranocichla hormuzensis has a typical cichlid shape. Males grow to around 10 cm, females remain slightly smaller with a length of 8 cm. Males are dark with white, slightly bluish spots, females are light gray in color with some faintly visible vertical stripes on the flanks. The dorsal fin of the animals is supported by 14 to 16 spines and 9 to 11 soft rays. The number of soft rays in the anal fin is 6 to 9, the number of vertebrae 28 to 30. The dorsal and anal fin are rounded. The pectoral fins are short and do not reach the pelvic fins. The scales are cycloid , with some irregular humps behind. The cheek, gill cover , throat, abdomen and the area between the pectoral fins and the base of the pelvic fin are not very scaly or unscaled. The toothed field of the lower pharyngealia is approximately round, the teeth of the same size. The mean length of the lower pharyngealia is 31.8 to 40.9% of the head length. An apophysis to support the swim bladder is located around the fourth vertebra. The mesethmoid, a skull bone, and the ploughshare (vomer) do not touch.
Way of life
Iranocichla hormuzensis occurs mainly in brackish, salty waters, less often in fresh waters that have muddy bottoms, are very warm and unshaded. The only vegetation in the waters is encrusting algae. During the winter rainy season there is a massive influx of fresh water. Stomach examinations show that Iranocichla hormuzensis mainly eats algae, including diatoms . Like all cichlids of the Oreochromini tribe , Iranocichla hormuzensis is a mouthbrooder . The females who take care of the mouthbrood can lay up to 38 eggs. Because of the small distribution area and the pollution of the residential waters with leaking oil, the species is possibly threatened with extinction. The IUCN does not list the species.
