Iranocichla persa is a species of fish from the cichlid family (Cichlidae). Along with Iranocichla hormuzensis, it is the second species of cichlid found in Iran, was only described in November 2016 and occurs in the Shur, Hasanlangi and Minab, three rivers that flow northeast of the island of Qeschm into the Strait of Hormuz .

features

Iranocichla persa has the typical, beefy cichlid shape of the oreochromini . The males examined for the initial description had standard lengths of 6.6 to 10.2 cm, the females are slightly smaller at 6.4 to 8.9 cm. With a length of 33.8 to 37% of the standard length, the head is quite large. The dorsal fin of the animals is supported by 14 to 17 hard rays and 9 to 10 soft rays. The number of hard rays in the anal fin is 3, the number of soft rays 6 to 8, the ventral fins have one hard ray and 5 soft rays. 17 to 24 scales were counted along the first lateral line at the top, 9 to 13 on the lower lateral line. Iranocichla persa has 14 gill rakes . Females have a longer head than males (33 to 38% of SL vs. 34 to 37% of SL), the interpupillary distance is larger (26 to 39% HL vs. 27 to 33% HL) and their pelvic fins are shorter (16 up to 20% SL vs. 17 to 23% SL).

The basic color of the fish is yellowish or a silvery gray. A dark gray saddle lies between the eyes and in the neck between the upper edges of the gill covers . A dark gray stripe runs from the rear edge of the eye to the base of the caudal fin, another, often only indistinctly visible, runs from the neck to the rear base of the dorsal fin. Both strips can be reduced to a row of spots. There are 6 to 11 weak vertical bars on the sides of the body. They are more clearly seen above the midline and fade below it. They are absent in reproductive males. The fins are transparent or gray. The caudal fin of some males is patterned by 5 to 6 vertical stripes, in other males, females and fry the caudal fin is monochrome.

From Iranocichla hormuzensis , the type species of the genus Iranocichla , Iranocichla persa can only be distinguished externally by the brood color of the males. The underside of the head and chest of Iranocichla persa are then orange, the base color of the body sides is gray with an orange tinge. Each scale has an iridescent , shimmering spot that together take up more space than the space between them. In Iranocichla hormuzensis , the underside of the head, chest and sides of the body are black during the breeding season, and the iridescent spots on the scales take up less space than the space in between. The tail fin of Iranocichla persa is patterned with small white spots that can form a wavy striped pattern. In Iranocichla hormuzensis , these spots are very small or absent. Iranocichla persa does not have a tilapia stain or it is only indistinctly visible, but a noticeable tilapia stain is present in the dorsal fin of Iranocichla hormuzensis . In addition, the two types can be distinguished based on their mitochondrial DNA .
