Tritomegas sexmaculatus is a bug from the family of earth bugs (Cydnidae).

features

The bugs are 6.0 to 8.0 millimeters long. They are very similar to the black and white earth bug ( Tritomegas bicolor ), differ from it by a more extensive white color at the edge of the pronotum and much darker, black, colored membranes of the hemielytres . The nymphs in the last stage can be distinguished from those of Tritomegas bicolor by their much darker color on the front part of the body.

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed from the northern Mediterranean region to southern Central and Eastern Europe and as far as Asia Minor. In Germany, the species was only found in the south until a few years ago, especially in the Middle Rhine and Main area. In the meantime, the species has expanded into the north and is sometimes found frequently in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg. Until recently it was missing in the northern lowlands of Germany, but is now also widespread there. In Austria it is widespread and not uncommon in the east and south. The species is also found in Great Britain, where it was first found in two locations in Kent in 2011 . In the meantime it has also expanded its distribution here. Unlike the black and white earth bug, the heat-loving species does not occur in more humid habitats.

Way of life

The animals live mainly on black nettles ( Ballota nigra ) and only rarely on other mint family (Lamiaceae). The way of life is similar to that of the black and white earth bug, but the mating, oviposition and development of the nymphs extend over a longer period of time, so that the nymphs can be found until September.
