The Trnovačko jezero ( Montenegrin Cyrillic : Трновачко језеро) is a glacial lake , in the area of the municipality of Plužine , in northwestern Montenegro . Because of its proximity to the Volujak massif, it is also called Volujačko jezero.
The lake lies between the Volujak and Maglić mountain ranges on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina , at an altitude of 1517 m above sea level , in a spacious basin . The lake has roughly the shape of a kidney, with the shoreline being weak. The lake is about 800 m long, about 700 m wide and up to a maximum of 9 m deep. The water of the lake is very clean and allows a clear view down to 4 m depth.
The lake is fed by rainfall, springs below the lake surface and short, only occasional mountain streams. There is no above-ground runoff, so the lake only loses water through evaporation and seepage. The seasonal fluctuations of the lake's water level are up to about 1 m.
The bottom of Trnovačko jezero is completely overgrown with aquatic plants, floating aquatic plants are rare. Beaked sedges (Carex rostrata) grow on shallows far from the lake . The only aquatic plant found in the lake is the grassy pondweed ( Potamogeton gramineus L. ).
Despite its remote location, it is a popular hiking destination.
