The dark- forehead lichen bear , the clay-yellow lichen bear or yolk bear ( Eilema lutarella ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the subfamily of the bear moth (Arctiinae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 21 to 30 millimeters. They have clay-yellow fore wings; the hind wings are brown-gray, but also become clay-yellow towards the inner edge. In the resting position they roll their wings around the body.

Similar species

Occurrence

They occur all over Europe , except the far north and Great Britain , east to the Amur . They prefer a sunny, dry, sparsely vegetated areas such as dry peat meadows, lean lawns , sand and limestone soils , but also heathland . They fly from mid-July to late August.

Way of life

The caterpillars hatch in September. They overwinter and pupate in the following June in brown webs on the ground, between lichen and moss . They feed on stone and earth lichens.
