Trumpet (heraldry)

Three trumpets in the coat of arms of Corneilla-del-Vercol

The trumpet is a common figure in heraldry . The musical instrument can be as a heraldic figure in the heraldic shield or as a gem next to, below, behind or above it. The special type of instrument should be emblazoned , but is not always clearly visible in the representation.

The term trumpet is ambiguous in heraldry. In the literature, it is also used to refer to the heraldic figure of buffalo horns , tan horns or horns of plenty.

Trumpet in the escutcheon

Here the trumpet is shown individually or up to three pieces (more is the exception) on the shield. The location must be clearly reported in the coat of arms description , whereby the location of the mouthpiece side can also contribute to the determination. All heraldic colors are possible, but gold or silver are preferred. When depicting a rider or angel blowing , it is not always a trumpet.

Trumpet as a gem

Here the instrument is draped with many other splendid pieces to form a coat of arms. Occasionally flags are attached to the instrument and turn it into a herald's trumpet . Tassels or cords can also adorn the trumpet and should be mentioned in the description. If the instrument is behind the shield, clarity can only be achieved with the description of the coat of arms. It could also be a trumpet specifically .
